Industrial Demolition

Cabot Corporation - Ohio River Facility
Demolition, Environmental Cleaning
and Restoration

Project Description
This project consisted of the purchase, environmental decommissioning and dismantling of approximately 100,000 square feet of Buildings/Units approximately 85’-0” in height spread across a 50 acre site located in Waverly, West Virginia. The site included Process Oil Tanks, Reactor Decks, Platforms, Pipe Trestles, Vessels, Slurry Tanks and (2) 120’-0” tall Columns.
Work Performed: environmental decommissioning, dismantling, site clearing, earthwork, excavation, brownfield

Project Details
Prior to demolition the most recent activities conducted at the plant by Cabot included the production of “carbon black” used in the rubber products industry. The existing site contained LOOSE carbon black material which extended throughout the entire site. Dust protection was a major issue at the project. The release of fugitive Carbon Black Product was a major concern to all on the project. To prevent the Carbon Black Product from migrating to the surrounding communities, North American Dismantling environmentally cleaned, disposed and vacuumed approximately 600 cubic yards of carbon black dust prior to demolition, which entailed washing the entire 78,000 square foot structure, removing all residual products.

The decommissioning process took in excess of 60 days. Included in the scope of work were the removal and recycling of all exterior concrete and asphalt totaling over 270,000 square feet of hard surfacing. North American Dismantling was responsible for crushing all non-hazardous concrete, mortar, bricks, and brick concrete and used the material to backfill the affected areas to the original pre-demolition elevations. North American Dismantling was responsible for grading, topsoil, and hydro-seeding the 50 acres affected by the demolition.

The building demolition consisted of:

  • Removal of approximately 100,000 square feet of buildings/units and foundations spread across a 50 acre site.
  • Processing over 6,000 Tons of Ferrous Material;
  • Processing over 1,125,000 lbs of Non-Ferrous;

The site work consisted of:

  • Preparing and instituting Site Specific Seismic Monitoring Plan; Soil Erosion Plan; Storm Water Pollution Plan; Transportation Plan; and a Fugitive Dust Control Plan;
  • Removal of 270,000 square feet of hard surfacing including concrete and asphalt drives, fencing, guard rail, bumpers and bollards;
  • Processing of 6,000 cubic yards of demolition hardfill to a 21AA specification;

The environmental work consist of:

  • Removal of all hazardous, regulated and toxic materials including PCB’s, asbestos, mercury, railroad ties, lead paint, radioactive devices, lighting, air pollution control devices, sweets, cathode ray tubes (CRT’s) and (CFC’s);
  • Segregating, removing, handling, packaging and transporting of 600 cubic yards of Carbon Black Material;
  • Removal and disposal of approximately 5,000 lineal feet of underground ACM piping;

North American Dismantling completed this project within its specified budget and within the time frame of its anticipated completion.
