Dismantling of Mobile Launch Tower No. 3

Overview
After being awarded the contract to demolish Mobil Launch Tower # 3 for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center. The Contractor was commissioned to develop the techniques that would be utilized to dismantle and match mark the tower for re-erection as a historical monument.

Details
The tower was 585’-0’ in height and had a gross weight of 13,000,000 pounds. The tower was disassembled in 18 major sections utilizing a 400 ton Link-Belt 2300 gantry crane, with the first lift weighing 100 tons, located at 50 feet below a 600 foot boom point height.

The tower sections, weighing just 200 tons each, were transported utilizing specially design dollies, eight miles on base, where they were unloaded, cribbed and stored for re-erection.
