Total Demolition Across Plant and Harbor Operations

NADC was selected to complete the total demolition, debris removal and site work for a former coal-fired power plant on Oahu.

The project extended beyond the plant proper to include dismantling a 1.6-mile overland conveyor and continuous ship unloader, requiring coordinated execution across plant and harbor environments.

The Challenge

Executing a demolition project of this scale on Oahu required extensive logistical planning before fieldwork could begin. NADC transported heavy equipment and specialized tools from the mainland, including a 200-ton high-reach excavator, while also assembling and relocating an experienced project team.

The work itself extended across three distinct areas: the plant proper, the 1.6-mile conveyor system and the harbor-based continuous ship unloader.

NADC’s Approach

NADC divided the project into three coordinated phases: demolition of the plant proper, dismantling of the overland conveyor and disassembly of the continuous ship unloader.

Specialized equipment was assigned to each phase based on the structure, location and access conditions. Cranes, torches and excavators supported the controlled dismantling of harbor equipment, while high-reach demolition methods were used throughout the plant site.
