What Are Environmental Services?

Environmental services support demolition and decommissioning projects where hazardous materials, regulated waste, contamination or sustainability requirements affect how the work must be planned and executed. NADC coordinates environmental requirements with demolition activities so that abatement, remediation, material handling and site work can proceed in the proper sequence.

Depending on the project, NADC works with owners, environmental consultants and qualified specialty subcontractors to address asbestos, lead, PCBs, universal waste and other regulated materials before or during demolition. NADC then coordinates the associated demolition, material separation, recycling and site restoration around the environmental requirements of the property.

A Planned Approach to Environmental Services

Environmental conditions can directly affect demolition sequencing, schedule, material handling and final site requirements. NADC evaluates the environmental scope alongside the demolition plan to coordinate specialized work, manage site activities and support an efficient transition from remediation through demolition and restoration.

Site Assessment & Scope Coordination

Existing environmental surveys, known site conditions, regulated materials, waste streams and project requirements are reviewed to define how environmental work will interface with demolition activities.

Abatement & Remediation Coordination

Qualified environmental contractors, consultants and other project stakeholders are coordinated as required for abatement, remediation, decontamination, monitoring and regulatory requirements.

Demolition & Material Management

Following required environmental preparation or clearance, demolition proceeds in planned stages with appropriate material separation, dust controls, waste handling and recycling practices.

Site Restoration & Project Closeout

Remaining materials and affected infrastructure are addressed as required, with recycling, disposal, backfilling, grading and project documentation coordinated around the owner’s final site requirements.

Pulp Mill Decommissioning

Fraser Paper – Old Burgess Pulp Mill

Berlin, New Hampshire

Environmental decommissioning and dismantling of an 85-structure pulp mill included remediation of CFCs, mercury, solvents and process liquors, along with 36 transformers containing both PCB and non-PCB materials. The project also included more than $1 million in asbestos abatement.

Radiological Demolition

U.S. Department of Energy – Northwind Demo

Moab, Utah

Demolition and environmental work at the former Atlas Uranium Mill included asbestos abatement, excavation of buried mill debris and removal of contaminated autoclaves within a controlled radiological area. NADC coordinated demolition, material reduction and decontamination activities alongside specialized environmental monitoring and abatement requirements.

Chemical Plant Demolition

SABIC Plant Decommissioning & Demolition

Washington, West Virginia

Environmental preparation was integrated into the phased decommissioning of the operating plastics facility, with buildings released for asbestos remediation before demolition began. NADC coordinated the environmental subcontractor, removal of regulated materials and the transition from abatement into demolition as portions of the plant were taken out of service.
