Transforming a 120-Acre Industrial Site

NADC completed the environmental decommissioning and dismantling of a former pulp mill consisting of 85 structures across approximately 120 acres.

The project combined demolition, environmental remediation, controlled stack removal and the recovery and marketing of reusable industrial equipment.

The Challenge

The former mill contained boiler houses, turbine buildings, bleach plants, offices, repair shops, generating facilities and three concrete stacks reaching up to 320 feet.

Environmental conditions included asbestos, mercury, solvents, process liquors, refrigerants and PCB-contaminated transformers. NADC needed to safely address these materials while separating reusable equipment from structures scheduled for demolition.

NADC’s Approach

NADC coordinated environmental remediation with the systematic dismantling of the mill’s buildings and process infrastructure.

The three concrete stacks were removed through controlled implosions. Reusable equipment was identified, marketed and sold, generating more than $10 million in asset value. The remaining site infrastructure was positioned for redevelopment and conversion into a biomass-energy facility.
