NADC completed selective demolition, asbestos abatement and contaminated-material processing at the former Atlas Uranium Mill site for the U.S. Department of Energy.
The project included demolition of the site’s last remaining mill building and the excavation, dismantling and size reduction of buried equipment and debris. Work was completed two weeks ahead of schedule with zero incidents.

The former uranium mill site contained radiologically contaminated equipment, demolition debris and asbestos-containing materials buried within the tailings pile.
The Atlas Building crossed both controlled and uncontaminated areas, requiring carefully phased abatement and demolition while preventing cross-contamination. Crews also needed to excavate and process buried autoclaves, heavy equipment and other contaminated materials.
NADC personnel completed Radiological Worker II certification and participated in daily coordination briefings with North Wind Portage, Radiological Controls and the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Atlas Building, including its concrete vaults and foundations, was demolished in six days. Specialized equipment was used to dismantle and reduce contaminated machinery and buried debris for transportation to an approved landfill.
Continuous monitoring, controlled material handling and water atomization helped minimize airborne contaminants throughout the work.
