Selective Demolition

Precision Conveyor Removal at an Operating Facility

NADC completed selective demolition of an existing salt conveyor system at Cargill’s Hersey, Michigan, facility.

The project required carefully planned crane picks to remove the conveyor, enclosure, support structures and associated components while maintaining safe access around the operating plant. NADC completed the work in six days, approximately two weeks ahead of schedule, with zero safety incidents.

Project Snapshot

Scope of Work

Selective demolition and removal of an existing salt conveyor system, enclosure, structural supports and associated equipment using seven planned crane picks.

Project Conditions

Operating salt plant, heavy crane picks, nearby construction activity and the need to maintain safe separation between demolition activities, facility employees and visitors.

Services Performed

  • Selective Demolition
  • Conveyor Removal
  • Crane & Rigging Operations
  • Structural Steel Removal
  • Concrete Removal
  • Material Recycling

The Challenge

The existing conveyor system extended between the salt plant and an igloo-style storage structure used in the facility’s salt handling operation. Its location within an operating plant required demolition activities to be carefully planned around employees, visitors and nearby construction.

The removal involved seven individual crane picks, including sections of the conveyor and enclosure, conveyor support legs, the steel structure located above the storage building and a smaller conveyor section inside the plant. The size and weight of the components required precise sequencing, controlled cutting and close coordination between crane operations and field crews.

NADC’s Approach

NADC developed a detailed lifting and demolition sequence for each component before removal began. Crews working from manlifts precut designated steel using torches, allowing final connections to be released after the crane was secured to each section. Removed components were lowered to grade and processed for recycling.

Following structural removal, NADC used a Bobcat equipped with a concrete hammer to reduce remaining concrete piers to grade.

Temporary fencing, barricades, signage and construction barrels were installed to establish a Demolition Exclusion Zone and maintain separation between demolition activities and normal plant traffic.

Through detailed planning and coordinated field execution, NADC completed the project in six days—approximately two weeks ahead of schedule—with zero safety incidents.
