NADC completed the selective demolition of a large pulp-bleaching tank located beside an operating bleach plant and the facility’s primary rail route.
The approximately 90-foot-tall insulated steel tank was removed during two consecutive days of coordinated, two-shift demolition work.

Active plant traffic, an adjacent rail line, limited access, a tank partially embedded in the bleach plant and a foundation designated for reuse.
The tank stood within a primary traffic area that included the plant’s main railroad line, both of which needed to remain partially open during demolition.
The rear portion of the tank was embedded in the bleach plant building and could not be removed with standard equipment. NADC also needed to protect the surrounding roadway, rail infrastructure and the existing tank foundation scheduled for reuse.
A Volvo EC700 high-reach excavator removed the upper portions of the tank while operating from crane mats and steel plates that protected the road and rail system.
The portion embedded in the plant was selectively cut by burners working from lifts. Once the tank was reduced to approximately 30 feet, a Volvo EC480 equipped with a shear completed the shell removal. A hydraulic hammer then removed the interior concrete cone without damaging the retained foundation.
