Deconstructing a Massive Coal-Fired Power Station

NADC completed the decommissioning and demolition of a former coal-fired power station situated along the Monongahela River.

The expansive project included environmental abatement, structural demolition, controlled implosions, material processing and site restoration across an approximately 70-acre working area.

The Challenge

The size, height and condition of the power station required detailed engineering throughout the project. Major structures included two 750-foot smokestacks, a 550-foot environmental stack, two hyperbolic cooling towers and a three-unit boiler structure.

NADC also encountered damaged beams and wind bracing from demolition completed before its arrival. The riverfront location required close coordination around public roads, railroad operations, emergency services, airspace and river traffic.

NADC’s Approach

NADC began with asbestos and universal-waste removal before progressing through a carefully sequenced demolition plan.

The team completed controlled implosions of the stacks, cooling towers and boiler structure after extensive structural preparation and agency coordination. Following demolition, materials were sorted, processed and downsized for off-site recycling, with approximately 60,000 tons shipped from the project as of the report date.
